Whole Wheat Pita Bread

Consumption of whole wheat pita bread began in Middle East, it is consumed there since many centuries, and then it came to Greece, Rome, Turkey, and Arab. Pita bread is known as pizza in west since 20th century. The Israeli name for the pita bread is 'Khubz adi'. This bread is very good for health. Pita bread breakfast can keep a person full until noon. This bread has extra fiber content than the normal white bread. The extra fiber in this bread slows down the release of sugar into the blood stream, this result in slow digestion.

Pita bread consumed with olive oil and humus reduces the rate of releasing sugar more because of the protein present in the chickpeas. The amino acid present in the chickpeas combines with the bread and supplies good amount of protein to the body. One large piece of whole wheat pita bread contains 170 calories. It holds 3% of fat and 14% of carbohydrates approximately.

To know, how to make whole wheat pita bread is not a big issue. It is very easy to make, one can prepare it at home and it is available in the market as well. The ingredients for pita bread are as follows- dry yeast, honey, warm water, bread flour or gluten flour, whole-wheat flour, cornmeal, olive oil, and salt. Method- mix 1-teaspoon honey, 2-teaspoon yeast and 1/2-cup warm water. Mix them in a bowl, stir together and keep it on a side until it becomes foamy. By the time, mix all the flours in another bowl. Mix 1/2 cup of the flour mixture into the yeast mixture and stir it well until it becomes smooth. Cover this mixture, allow it to rest for another 45 to 50 minutes until it becomes bubbly and doubles in quantity, and do not forget to keep it at a warm room temperature. When it becomes bubbly, add the remaining flour and water and add oil and salt then make dough from this mixture.

After making dough, put it on a surface covered with flour and knead the dough on the floured surface. Knead the dough for around 10 to 12 minutes until it becomes non-sticky, elastic, and smooth. After kneading the dough, make a ball of it and place it in an oiled bowl. Cover this bowl with plastic and let the ball rise or double in quantity at warm room temperature. After an hour, take the balls and cut it into the pieces. Form small balls and the roll out these balls on a floured surface.

Transfer them on the baking sheets sprinkled with cornmeal, cover them with clean towels, and let them stand at room temperature for another 45 minutes. Pre heat the oven at 180 degree Celsius. Place the baking sheets on the oven rack and bake for around 3 minutes until the bread is golden then turn the bread and bake it for another 1 minute. After the bread is fully baked, take it out of the oven and wrap it in the towel.

One can make the pita bread very easily at home, and enjoy the freshly baked warm bread. It is not that tough to bake pita bread although it is time consuming but that is worth the efforts and time.
